Lost Propertyintermediate series

This puzzle is of the “standard” sort, like the Inconsequential Seminars, and should be approached in much the same way. Start by deciding on the sorts, and then extract the lists of five things of each sort (five people, five days, etc). Then declare some one-one functions to correlate the sorts with each other before writing the constraints.

Our local shopping centre has a Lost Property Department. People lose things at the shops every day of the week; at least, last week there was a different thing lost and then reclaimed the same day, on each day from Monday to Friday. Who lost what, on which day, and in which shop?

  1. Coco the clown reported sadly that he had lost his red nose; that happened the day after the pharmacy had sent in an item.
  2. The owner of the newsagency handed in an umbrella which someone had left in his shop.
  3. One of the items was left in the cafe on Monday.
  4. Professor Dodder left something in the shoeshop. Nothing new about that: he leaves things everywhere. Probably shouldn’t have been in that shop anyway. Look, he’s even wandered into the wrong puzzle…
  5. Ferdinand the fire chief lost and reclaimed his item on Wednesday.
  6. The briefcase was lost and reclaimed on Tuesday, but not by Flo the barmaid, whose visit to the Lost Property Department happened later in the week.
  7. The supermarket sent in an item on the day after a teddy bear was lost and found; the teddy bear did not come in on Thursday.
  8. A large and smelly cheese was handed in; fortunately, it was reclaimed almost immediately.

I’m not telling you what Alex lost: you can work that out for yourself.
