Not much to say about this puzzle. You will need to think a little about how to represent the fact that one of the clues is false, but otherwise it is fairly straightforward.
The walls of our local art gallery were in a disgracefully dirty state until one night the cleaning staff set to work and enthusiastically scrubbed it down, after removing the pictures of course. Unfortunately, when they came to re-hang the pictures on the newly cleaned wall of the West Room, they could not quite remember the order (left to right) in which the masterpieces ought to go. They knew that the leftmost picture was an Alcock and the rightmost one a Golley, and after picking each other’s brains for some time came up with the following recollections:
- The middle picture was either by Battye or by Fairtry.
- The Battye was not next to the Endover.
- After the Alcock, you passed both the Battye and the Craftlesse before the Endover and also before the Fairtry.
- The Dauber was somewhere to the right of the Endover.
- There was exactly one picture between the Craftlesse and the Endover.
So they re-hung the pictures, but when the Director of the gallery arrived in the morning, she noticed immediately that the order of pictures was wrong. On investigation, it turned out that exactly one of the five claims numbered above was mistaken.
In what order did the cleaners hang the pictures, and how should they hang?
You should aim to make the solver output two models: the cleaners’ order and the Director’s order, with a marker of some sort to say which is which. There seems to be no elegant way to combine the two orders into one model – well, there are ways, but they are all ugly.
