Sliding Tileslogician series
This is another classic puzzle. Human solvers can have fun with the 15 puzzle (15 tiles on a 4×4 grid) but for logical purposes the 8 puzzle as given here is complex enough.
The 8 tiles on this 3×3 grid are in standard numerical order.
| 1 | 2 | 3 |
| 4 | 5 | 6 |
| 7 | 8 |
A move in the game consists of sliding one tile adjacent to the blank into the blank position. Find sequences of moves that convert a scrambled starting position into the standard one above. Try starting in the following state:
| 2 | 6 | 4 |
| 7 | 3 | |
| 5 | 1 | 8 |
The time taken to find a solution depends very much on the minimum number of moves required. For efficiency, experiment with the pre-test limit in the settings and with priority ordering of function symbols. Try out your code with easy problems (requiring short plans) before pushing on to the harder ones.
